Over the 5 midweek services of Lent, I've been focussing on the five things that I fear most about this Camino - being lost, being lonely, being weary, being uncharitable and finally next week, failure. All of these things may appear in future blogs so that you can tick them off! There is also the frustration of missing the Irish Cup Final at the National Stadium (Windsor Park) in which the fearless Ballinamallard United will be playing against Crusaders. And now to the first challenge - packing! there are some wonderful people on-line who are officiously recommending a 35 litre rucksack with no more that 5K weight. I have no time for such people (you can tick off "uncharitableness" already). My 70 litre pack will weigh just slightly over 10K. I think that is quite reasonable for a six week trek. I will have three pairs of footwear, layered clothing, gadgets to prevent getting lost, an adequate amount of clean underwear, a sleeping bag, poncho, fleece, gilet of many pockets, BUFC flag, Kindle, Tablet, Phone, both passports (Brexit proof), and medical accouterments for bowel problems, bladder problems, blister problems, sinus problems, dental problems and achilles tendon problems.
The Bambino will need none of these things for it's journey. We come into this world with nothing but we certainly gather plenty of junk afterwards. However, I have no intention of completing the Camino in the same state of undress as the Bambino!
